This is the time of year – right after the Fourth of July – that athletes and coaches start the push toward the start of the season.

In less than one month, football programs across south Florida will put on the pads as the 2018 season is coming quickly.

While many of the future classes have had the chance to showcase their skills to college coaches who came down all spring – as well as visit many camps and 7-on-7 events – the next three weeks will be all about conditioning.

As 5-star athletes are pampered by the large apparel companies, it’s the athletes who do not have the spotlight shining in their direction that truly need the help.

Even in talent rich south Florida, it is often times tough to attain that scholarship. It has gotten to the point where these student/athletes have to work year round – often with no breaks – just to realize that dream.

Even with more colleges added to the football mix every year, the talent that we have down here is amazing, being able to compete against anyone – at any level, but getting those colleges and universities to continue to come south takes a lot of work that high school coaches and even parents need to stay on top of.

As we do each and every Thursday, we shine the spotlight on three athletes – here in Miami-Dade and Broward Counties who deserve the attention:

2019 –Malcolm Ray, DL, Miami Carol City. Even though college coaches have been watching this impressive athlete since arriving at Carol City – and have sent their many offers out – there is a feeling that many have not watched him play live. In a world where sitting behind the computer and watching film – instead of getting out and seeing first hand – many evaluators are missing the best part of this quality football player. Pass rusher, run stopper and just about anything you need from a defensive lineman. This is why the Chiefs are among the best in Florida!

2019 – Harold Sims III, DB, Plantation. Here is one of those talented football prospect that many had the opportunity to watch last year at nearby South Plantation and came away impressed. This is indeed someone who the Colonels will be counting on this coming season as they make a solid run in 8A. Big time talent who competes year round.

2020 – Gerand Turner, WR, South Miami. Heading into his junior season, here is yet another football player that deserves the spotlight. An impressive route runner, who has the speed and athleticism to turn heads and help the Cobras improve. While spotlighting him a few times in the past has helped to bring notoriety, this coming season will certainly help as colleges continue to watch his progress
