The best thing about the start of any new season is that every coach, player, student and fan has the right to believe that they are the best.

This is the week – when athletes and coaches make all that hard work and sacrifices pay off. This is indeed where you separate yourself from those who simply did not work harder.

Football has long been played with a helmet and plenty of padding, we begin our 48th year by launching one of the most impressive opening week schedule in recent memory.

No matter where you look, there are going to be elite programs and athletes competing against each other.

No. 1 Carol City at No. 3 Plantation American Heritage, Friday, 7:30 This is a classic matchup of very talented football teams and solid coaches. The two-time defending 5A state champion Patriots at home for a huge game No. 1 vs. No. 3 in the first week of the season!

No. 5 Central at No. 6 Cardinal Gibbons, 7. Much anticipation has followed this Dade-Broward Challenge game. A lot of talent and showcase prospects in this game as the two teams meet for the first time on the football field. Two teams who fell short of their goals in 2017.

No. 7 Deerfield Beach at No. 8 Chaminade-Madonna, Friday, 7. Two programs who have gotten used to battling each other over the past few years, it is the first night home game in school history, but not the highest rated opponent the Lions have hosted. Back in 2004, Daytona Beach Mainland came to Hollywood nationally rated. The Bucks are loaded and will be one of the teams to watch for in 8A.

De Matha, Maryland At  No. 2 St. Thomas Aquinas, Saturday, 7. One of the most anticipated for week games that will attract national attention – as both teams are among the country’s elite programs.

No. 4 Northwestern at No. 15 Miramar, Friday, 7. Yet another game in the Dade-Broward Challenge that will really showcase some of the region’s elite players and teams. The Bulls are the defending 6A state champions.

In addition to those marquee matchups, the first week of the high school season also features some impressive games to check out.
