There are so many great things about south Florida high school football that many just cannot put into words.

Having a Teddy Bridgewater, Dalvin Cook, James White or any of the 64 current NFL players from Miami-Dade and Broward Counties show up on the sidelines and hang out with everyone at a game or during the 7-on-7 season is common.

You can see Hall of Famer Michael Irvin walking the sideline at St. Thomas Aquanis – where dozens and dozens of big time football players have landed through the years.

Speaking of St. Thomas Aquinas, the Raiders are indeed a team that has surrounded itself with those “been there – done that” type of football minds – such as recent Hall of Famer Jason Taylor and one of the Dolphins best ever, Sam Madison

No matter where you go in south Florida these days, former NFL players – for one reasons or another -have assumed a coaching role and have done very well.

Through the years, many have been able to start as assistants, learn the ropes – and like former Dolphin and Giant Reyna Thompson – and UM Hurricane, Kansas City Chief and Redskin, Donnell Bennett, Dolphin great Jeff Dellenbach, as well as Mike Rumph – and now with Pat Surtain – the transition has been better than many expected.

“The one thing that was the biggest obstacle when I took over the job was all the administrative stuff,” Rumph recalled of his job at American Heritage Plantation. “It wasn’t until the second year when I started to get things going on the field.

One of the coaches who made that smooth move to the head coaching ranks was former Miami High and Southridge iconic running back Sedrick Irvin. The former Michigan State All-American has followed the lead of former coach Nick Saban and has won everywhere he has been.

This year, Irvin makes the move from Miami High to Southridge – and the Spartans are loaded up.

While some prospects seem to get more attention than other, there are always athletes that we help to promote that fit today’s 3 For Thursday.

Every Thursday, we bring you prospects from Miami-Dade and Broward who are extremely gifted, but for one reason or another are not getting the play they deserve.

2020 - Dontae Lunan, SS, Hollywood McArthur. Yet another football player that we have had the opportunity to watch a number of times - and when all is said and done - there are very few playmakers in south Florida like this young man. Solid football player who hits like a linebacker, but has the quickness and skill level to compete at the safety position. While he is just going to be a junior, the Mustangs have a bonafide leader on the defensive side of the ball - which is a place where first year head coach Pierre Senatus and his team have been concentrating on. Keep an eye on his progress - he will be the one around the ball - on every play.

2019 – Wendol Philord, DB, Doral Academy. Here is someone that we continue to expose, and if you have ever watched him play, you would agree. This is a pure football player. No frills, no 4.27 (40) or any of the other bells and whistles that come along with it. Philord is a pure gamer who every coach and player on his team has the utmost respect for. When he shows up to practice, he brings everything he has. Watch him perform in a game, and there is no doubt that he will be one of the best on the field. Prospects like this just do not come along very often.

2019 - Vantraveous Williams, WR, Coral Springs Taravella. In an area of the state that has so much talent, athletes like this young man often get lost in the shuffle, but watch this quality football player perform and you will be sold. Just another prospect that is willing to do what ever it takes to help the Trojans make the playoffs - while showcasing his abilities. Whether it was games, practices or camps and 7-on-7, this is one of those gifted young men who is certainly due for a breakout year. This who have had the pleasure of watching his progress will all tell you that his future is indeed very bright.
