Check the message boards over the past two weeks and you will see plenty of athletes in south Florida doing what they have to do.

No matter if it’s Instagram, Facebook or Twitter, football players are out there, lifting and running and proving that what happens in July will be a direct reflection on where you end the season.

It’s not to say that the area powers have the market cornered on hard work – because that would be far from the truth. But this is time of year that the news is slow, commits are not as frequent as they were during and after spring, and where the long hours of conditioning and the occasional 7-on-7 events, keep everyone sharp and ready to go.

Any coach who has been doing this for many years will tell you that it’s this time of year where the real football players surface. Sacrifices are made and results are shown.

No matter where you look, there are athletes, working in the weight room, getting together to run routes and getting reps against the best of the best.

In many ways this is the time of year where football players turn heads – and while it may be the local analysts that watch along with high school coaches, word of mouth is a beautiful thing, as it helps to expose these talented young men.

Every week, we spotlight three of the area’s rising football players. The trio today is indeed impressive.

2019 – Jovon Smith, WR, Miami Booker T. Washington. If you watched the Tornadoes during the spring, there were a number of quality players that head coach Tim “Ice” Harris and his football team showcased. Athletes that many knew very little about. As this team moves forward, it’s players like this young man who has a chance to really turn heads. The Miami Killian transfer runs crisp patterns, has quickness and is not afraid to mix it up for the ball. With an improving offense, and of course, a challenging schedule, this is someone who can jump into the spotlight – just like that!

2019 – Emmanuel St. Germain, LB, Miami Dr. Krop. Yet another football talent that has really stayed below the radar the past three years – and if you ask anyone on the team – or anyone who has watched the Lightning play – they all will tell you just how valuable he’s been. This is someone who will play running back, linebacker and kicker – just to make sure that his team has a chance to win every game. A complete athlete who is ready for the challenge once again this coming season. When this program opens the season, he will be a four-year starter. Impressive!

2019 – James Wallace, Athlete, Pompano Beach Blanche Ely. As the Tigers continue to rebuild, it’s prospects like this who certainly make a difference. Someone who can play multiple positions and give this team a spark. While he will play quarterback, look for Wallace to use his speed and athleticism to create positives - and that is what this program is searching for with playoff positions open in 7A. This is the kind of football player you build with, and that is the plan for a program that is never short on athletes.
