When Duke Johnson was in high school at Norland, you could tell that one day he was going to get a chance to give back – and it would be great to see.

Well, fast forward seven years – and after a stellar career at the University of Miami, leaving as the school’s all-time leading rusher, Johnson has certainly lived up to the promise.

When area high school teams flock to Ives Park tomorrow (Saturday) for the Third Annual Duke Johnson Foundation 7-on-7, it will be a gathering of programs that were personally invited by Johnson, who recently signed a contract extension that makes him a very happy young man.

“I am so excited about our event,” Johnson said. “I remember when I was in high school and to have someone step up and provide a great forum like this, would have been tremendous.”

Johnson’s dream of giving back not only includes football, every year, the foundation awards scholarships to students at his alma mater – as well as provide so many other things for those who are in need.

Over the past few years, some of the area’s top teams have made their way to this event – and while there are prizes for the winning teams, the level of play is indeed worth the trip to the North Dade.
