As the rain fell in much of South Florida over the Memorial Day weekend, special teams still managed to take center stage.

While many of us dodged rain drops, there was a group of quality punters, kickers and long snappers – from all over, who took part in the competitive Kornblue Kicking Fab 50 National Showcase at Calvary Christian Academy in Fort Lauderdale.

While many fans – and even players sometimes take special teams for granted - the competition that went on last Saturday – right here in this region of the country – was truly impressive.

The level of kicking, punting and leg snapping talent in South Florida continues to get better and better every year - with many going on to the next level and beyond.

Once again this year, several prospects from South Florida did quite well at the event. Here is a look at those impressive performances:

One of the nation’s top long snapper’s Frank Melgarejo, a Class of 2019 standout from Plantation American Heritage won the long snapping competition and was chosen as Overall Showcase Long Snapping title.

One of the top performers nationally, Melgarejo has been among the most consistent you will find.

Another South Florida standout who is truly one of the best around, Tyler Waxman, and the West Broward High prospect showed it by being named as the Overall Showcase Kicking Champion, winning both the kicking and punting titles.

Waxman’s head coach at West Broward Monte Dilworth had talked about this quality special teams player last season as being among the nation’s elite.

Class of 2020 kicker Hristos Kommatas from Cardinal Gibbons took home the title in the showcase.

Class of 2021 Doral Academy kicker Joshua Lopes continues to attract the attention. He captured the kicking title in his class, further showing why he is one of those to keep an eye on throughout the next few years.

Miami Gulliver Prep future kicking standout Will Bettridge, a Class of 2022 future star, was named kicking champion as well. He finished second in the punting competition.
