FRIDAY FOCUS: District Champ Palmetto Has Something To Prove

Last year while winning one of the most talented and competitive 8A football districts in the state of Florida, Palmetto lost to rival Miami Southridge.

In fact, if you go back through the history of the meeting between these two teams, you will find that the Panthers have not won many at all – in fact – just 3 in the past 15 meetings.

For that to come to an end tonight (7:30, Tropical Park) and give head coach Mike Manasco and his team a huge leg up in repeating, Palmetto cannot play like they did last week in an overtime win against Coral Gables.

Not to take anything away from the Cavaliers, but Southridge is indeed a different team than the one that stretched the Panthers to the limit, jumping out to a 13-0 lead.

Beating veteran head coach Sedrick Irvin and his football team will not be easy. This is a program, despite losing to 4A Booker T. Washington, that has played a very challenging schedule.

They have gifted athletes on both sides of the ball who have already made a huge impact, especially last week on the road against previously unbeaten 5A Rockledge.

Palmetto’s signature win was at Naples. For the second straight year, the Panthers beat Coach Bill Kramer’s Golden Eagles, which is something that has only happened 6 times in 11 years at home.

Winning this evening’s game will come down to which team makes the least mistakes – and that includes penalties – something that Palmetto had 15 of last week.

In addition to that key district matchup, here is a look at the other games to check out this evening and into Saturday:
