For years, the final week of the high school football season meant that if you made the playoffs, you were not going to play your standout performers -  in fear of something happening in what is deemed by many as a “meaningless” game.

While many coaches still approach this final game with caution, unless a player is injured and can use the additional week of rest before the playoffs, they are now playing.

The importance for some of these teams will be getting the most points and get the highest seed possible. Many have already done that.

What last night, this evening and Saturday  will be about is competing. It’s a week where many young prospects, who will be in the mix next year, will see extensive varsity competition - setting the table for the off season.

Tonight there are some very interesting games.

Last year, Miramar walked into St. Thomas Aquinas and handed the Raiders one of the worst losses the program had suffered in many generations.

Tonight, the Patriots play host to the top-rated 7A team in the state. Unlike last year where Miramar was loaded with senior standouts, they are young and St. Thomas has the experience.

Since the second week of the season, head coach Matt Dubuc and his Cardinal Gibbons Chiefs have been riding high, winning their first district since 1994 and beating American Heritage.

This evening, it’s a road game for this playoff bound squad - and they will be in Hollywood to play surprising McArthur, a team that went from being one of worst team last season - to a perfect 9-0 record under first year head coach Pierre Senatus.

The Chiefs come in as a huge favorite, and the Mustangs are looking for the majors upset.

Another undefeated team is head coach Daniel Luque’s University School Sharks. Other than losing to 5A American Heritage in the kickoff classic, this team has paved over every opponent, average over 45 points a game.

Tonight, it’s defending 3A state  champion Chaminade-Madonna, who come in as a surprising 7 point underdog - despite losing to 9-1 American Heritage and 8-1 Deerfield Beach. Should be a great one!

While their records may not indicate it, tonight’s Soul Bowl at Traz Powell Stadium between Northwestern and Jackson has always been about respect.

Even though the defending 6A state champion Bulls have owned the recent series, it is always a game worth watching.

Here is a look at some other games to check out. Enjoy!
