Jets Coach Adam Gase Stonewalls Reporter Asking About Team Scrimmage

With the regular season fast approaching, the Jets, like most teams, will be holding a scrimmage in the near future. Rich Cimini, who covers the Jets for ESPN, was curious about when that scrimmage might take place. That seems like something that would be good to know for scheduling purposes, but Adam Gase, not known for his cooperation with the media, didn’t seem too keen on supplying that information.

"Do you want me to just lay out everything for you, Rich?” asked the standoffish head coach during Saturday’s Zoom call with local reporters. “Just show up, you’ve got nothing else to do.”

“Do you know which day yet?” Cimini pressed, hoping his persistence might pay off.

“I might,” said Gase, continuing to stonewall the longtime beat writer. “I’m not going to tell you, Rich. You just show up. We’ll let you know when you get here.”

Very helpful. It’s hard to tell if Gase was just messing with Cimini—someone he has dealt with on a near-daily basis for the past year and a half—or was hoping to preserve some sense of competitive advantage by keeping that information under wraps. Either way, it was a pretty bizarre exchange between an eccentric coach and an exasperated reporter simply trying to do his job.

A successful offensive coordinator with both Denver and Chicago, Gase’s transition to the head-coaching ranks has not been as smooth as hoped. The 42-year-old’s confrontational stylings and cagey demeanor toward the media have done little to help his cause.

Bettors aren’t expecting much from Gang Green this year with FanDuel Sportsbook setting the Jets’ over/under for wins at a meager 6.5. After trading arguably their best player, Jamal Adams, to the Seahawks last month, 2020 has all the makings of a rebuild year in East Rutherford, though after last season’s disappointment (7-9), Gase may not have the luxury of lowered expectations to fall back on.
