Reigning American League MVP Mike Trout is cognizant of COVID-19’s severity and readily admits to having doubts about playing baseball amid an unprecedented global pandemic. In fact, the Halos outfielder has yet to officially commit to the 2020 MLB season in part because his wife is due to give birth in August. The 28-year-old has weathered criticism throughout his career for not being as vocal as other prominent sports figures like LeBron James and Aaron Rodgers, but his unusually strong stance on the coronavirus has garnered widespread praise.

Trout’s mother recently shared an Internet meme of her son working out at the Angels’ facility in Anaheim, reminding her nearly 7,000 Twitter followers that “If Mike Trout can wear a mask while running the bases, you can wear a mask going out in public.” The image of a masked Trout turning on the jets has now made its way onto a baseball card with the release of Topps’ new “Road to Opening Day” series, available for a limited time on the company’s website. The 25-card set featuring Trout and others partaking in MLB “Summer Camp” is priced at $29.99.

Though not as eye-catching as Andrew McCutchen’s iconic “Disco Drew” card that’s been making the rounds lately, the masked Trout should be a popular commodity among trading-card collectors while also serving as a subtle reminder that if the best baseball player on the planet has his mask on, you should too.
