It was a crazy offseason for Cam Newton, as he was released by the Panthers in March and then went unsigned until early in the summer.

Eventually, he signed a one-year deal with the Patriots worth up to $7.5 milliom, but with only $550,000 guaranteed.

Speaking via video conference Friday, Newton said how excited he is to be part of the organization.

“Listen, I am still constantly, I don’t want to say disbelief at this particular point in time, but it’s just a surreal moment," he said. "Nobody really knows how excited I am just to be part of this organization in (more) ways than one. Just following up such a powerful dynasty that is rich with so much prestige, lineage of success, that for me a lot of people would hide from the notion to do certain things, but for me I think this opportunity is something I wake up pinching myself every day. It’s so surreal coming down One Patriot Place every single day seeing the whole ambiance.

"Not only that, but seeing so much support around the city of Boston and Foxborough. It’s just such a great environment for not only myself, but players included. It’s crazy.”

Newton, who has dealt with a number of injuries the last few seasons, said he's feeling "amazing" and has no limitations.

The 2015 NFL MVP also spoke to learning of the organization's interest and then speaking with Robert Kraft, Bill Belichick, etc.

“I was just blown away by the whole overall professionalism of just the Patriots organization starting with Robert Kraft and Coach Belichick as well as eventually speaking with Coach Josh (McDaniels)," he said. "I do know I was in L.A. and it kind of caught me by surprise, but at the same time I enjoyed this whole process.”

Newton will be competing with second-year player Jarrett Stidham for the starting job.
