A major league source confirmed a Boston Globe report that Dustin Pedroia has suffered a significant setback in his attempt to come back from the left knee issues which has limited the second baseman to just nine games over the past two seasons.

The injury not only puts Pedroia's participation in spring training in question but also casts a sizable shadow over any potential comeback. It was understood that this latest rehab process had little to no room for error if the second baseman was going to participate in the major league again.

Pedroia is currently weighing his options with his agents (Sam and Seth Levinson) and his family.

During a November interview on the Bradfo Sho Podcast Pedroia was cautious in his anticipation of what might transpire in the coming season.

"I spent two years saying I was going to come back and kick everybody’s ass and then I played nine games,” Pedroia said. “It is what it is. … You have to find a way to deal with it the best way you can. I’m not going to sit here and say I’m going to come back and be better than ever. Could I? Maybe. I don’t put it past anybody. It’s one step at a time. I’m not looking at the big picture."

The two primary candidates to man second base for the Red Sox are newly-acquired Jose Peraza and Michael Chavis, with rookie C.J. Chatham having been integrated into the position during hi 2019 season at Triple-A Pawtucket along with the Arizona Fall League.
