SFHSS TOP 15 –Carol City Gets The Race To Orlando Started

There is no doubt that this season has skipped along. It was just yesterday that we had the August kickoff classics.

As the regular season came to an end last week, the focus for the Top 15 area teams is the state playoffs – and it all begins this week.

As many south Florida programs look toward the opening round, we will be there every step of the way – bringing you the teams, prospects and everything that is football all the way to Camping World Stadium in Orlando in the first weekend of December.

As you will see, many of the favorites - such as No. 1 Carol City, No. 2 Central, No. 3 St. Thomas Aquinas, No. 4 Christopher Columbus and No. 5 Deerfield Beach will have their work cut out to come away with a state title this season.

Here is a look at the Top 15 as we head into the first round of the playoffs:

1. Carol City Chiefs (6A – 8-2). As head coach Benedict Hyppolite and his team finished the regular season with a 41-13 win over American, this program continues to show why it is one of the nation’s elite. THIS WEEK: The first round of the state playoffs get under way. The Chiefs will play host to district foe Miami Norland on Friday at Traz Powell Stadium. NEXT WEEK: The winner of the opening round game will take on either No. 5 Central or No. 4 Dillard.

2. Central Rockets (6A – 8-2). It’s playoff time – and after a week off – head coach Roland Smith and his team is ready to make a run toward Orlando. THIS WEEK: The Rockets will travel to Fort Lauderdale on Friday to play No. 4 seed Dillard. NEXT WEEK: The winner of the opening round game will take on either No. 8 Norland or No. 1 Carol City.

3. St. Thomas Aquinas Raiders (7A – 9-1). Riding into the first round of the state playoffs on a five game winning streak, head coach Roger Harriott and his team got revenge against Miramar – beating the Patriots on the road, 48-6. THIS WEEK: The Raiders will play host to South Miami on Friday at home in the first round of the state playoffs. NEXT WEEK: The winner of the opening round game will take on the winner of No. 4 Doral Academy and No. 5 Fort Lauderdale.

4. Columbus Explorers (8A – 10-0). After playing one of the toughest schedules in south Florida, head coach Chris Merritt and his team took the final week of the regular season to prepare for the playoffs. THIS WEEK: The Explorers will open up the state playoffs on Friday with a home game at Tropical Park against district rival, Coral Gables. NEXT WEEK: The winner of the opening round game will take on the winner of No. 4 Belen Jesuit and No. 5 Miami Palmetto.

5. Deerfield Beach Bucks (8A – 9-1). After closing out the 2018 regular season two weeks ago, head coach Jevon Glenn and his team are set for the state playoffs – and a run at the 8A state title game. THIS WEEK: The playoffs begin – as the Miramar Patriots will be the opening round opponent. NEXT WEEK:.The winner of the opening round game will take on the winner of No. 4 Plantation and No. 5 Piper.

6. Cardinal Gibbons Chiefs (5A – 8-2).. After losing the first two games of the season, head coach Matt Dubuc’s team rolled to a 21-0 win over previously unbeaten McArthur. THIS WEEK: The state playoffs begins as the district champions will open at home with a first round game against head coach Hurlie Brown and his Merritt Island Mustangs. NEXT WEEK: The winner of the opening round game will take on the winner of No. 3 Orlando Jones and No. 6 Orlando Bishop Moore.

7. American Heritage Patriots (5A – 8-1). The two time defending state champions took the final week of the season – as head coach Pat Surtain gets his team set for the state playoffs. THIS WEEK: The first round of the 5A playoffs gets started with a Friday game in Fort Pierce against district champion Westwood. NEXT WEEK: The winner of the opening round game will take on the winner of No. 1 Rockledge against No. 8 Coconut Creek.

8. Southridge Spartans (8A – 8-2). The regular season came to an end for this talented football team – with a convincing 36-0 victory over Dr. Krop. THIS WEEK:  The opening round of the state playoffs starts on Friday with a home game against North Miami for the second time this year. NEXT WEEK: The winner of the opening round game will take on the winner of No. 3 Hialeah and No. 6 South Dade.

9. Chaminade-Madonna Lions (3A – 8-2). In beating previously unbeaten and No. 1 4A team, University School, 35-0, head coach Dameon Jones and his team head into the state playoffs on a roll. THIS WEEK: Securing the top seed in 3A gives the defending state champions the opening week off. NEXT WEEK: Will take on the winner of an opening round game between No. 4 Miami Westminster Christian and No. 5 Palmer Trinity.

10. Palmetto Panthers (8A - 9-1). After losing in the final week of September to district rival Miami Southridge, head coach Mike Manasco and his team won five straight – including a 43-2 victory over Coral Reef.  THIS WEEK: The opening round of the playoff begins on Thursday as the Panthers take on Miami Belen Jesuit. NEXT WEEK: The winner of the opening round game will take on .the winner of No. 2 Southridge and No. 7 North Miami.

11. University School Sharks (4A – 9-1). Despite an amazing season, head coach Daniel Luque and his impressive team dropped the regular season finale to defending 3A state champion Chaminade-Madonna, 35-0. THIS WEEK: Being the top seed in 4A, the Sharks will have a bye in the opening round. NEXT WEEK: Will take on the winner of an opening round game against No. 4 Monsignor Pace and No. 5 Gulliver Prep.

12. Plantation Colonels (8A – 9-1). Since losing to district rival Western back in early October, head coach Steve Davis and his football team closed with convincing wins over Coral Glades, rival South Plantation and this past week – Douglas, 40-0.. THIS WEEK: It’s the first round of the 8A state playoffs, and the Colonels will be at home as a No. 4 seed and will take on the team they opened the year with - Piper. NEXT WEEK: Will take on the winner of an opening round game next Friday against No. 1 Deerfield Beach and No. 8 Miramar.

13. South Dade Bucs (8A – 8-2). After a few weeks of playing close games, head coach Nate Hudson got his team back on track to end the regular season – with a close win against 4A Miami Edison, 34-29. . THIS WEEK: The 8A state playoffs get started – with an opening round game against surprising Hialeah. . NEXT WEEK: Will take on the winner of an opening round game between No. 2 Southridge and No. 7 Hialeah.

14. Hialeah Thoroughbreds (8A, 9-1). In winning for the 8th straight time this season, head coach Gary Sanchez and his impressive team finished off the regular season with a big time 42-13 win against Goleman. THIS WEEK: The district champions will host a first round 8A playoff game on Friday against No. 6 South Dade. NEXT WEEK: Will take on the winner of an opening round game next Friday between No. 2 Southridge and No. 7 North Miami.

15. Belen Jesuit (8A, 8-2). After a slow start to begin the season, second year head coach Eddie Delgado and his impressive team rolled to six straight wins, including the regular season ending 32-7 win against Monsignor Pace. THIS WEEK: The opening round of the state playoffs gets started with a home game on Thursday night against Miami Palmetto.. NEXT WEEK: Will take on the winner of an opening round game between No. 1 Christopher Columbus and No. 8 Coral Gables..

(TIE) – Fort Lauderdale Flying Ls (7A, 8-2). There is no doubt that this program is one of the most improved in south Florida under the direction of head coach and alumnus Richard Dunbar. An amazing season in the same district as power St. Thomas Aquinas. THIS WEEK: It’s the first round of the playoffs against Doral Academy. NEXT WEEK: The winner will get the victor of the No. 1 St. Thomas Aquinas and No. 8 South Miami game.
