What we are finding out as we head down the homestretch of the 2018 high school football season is that every week until the regular season is over, there will be key, important matchups.

As we are already here in the 8th week of the season, district and non-district games that carry valuable points for seeding.

The days of just playing out the string because you have made the playoffs, if you are NOT a district winner, you are trying to get every point you can to get a better seed.

Like last week – when there were some key district games – we are once again here with some very important games. Too bad we all can’t see every key game, so we have to pick and choose.

This week, as you will see, is loaded with games that mean a lot. Here is a look at a few of them:

No. 8 Plantation at No. 15 Western, Friday, 7. Playoff position and district title will certainly be up for grabs in this meeting. After losing to Dillard, the Wildcats have been impressive. The Colonels are unbeaten with a win over Miramar already. Big time matchup.

No. 10 Cardinal Gibbons at No. 3 American Heritage-Plantation, Friday, 7:30. Nobody has to say a word here. The two-time defending 5A state champions – who have won at an amazing pace – against a program that has been knocking on the door for several years. Could be the first of two meetings, although the region has gotten much stronger and more competitive.

No. 1 Carol City at No. 14 Northwestern, Friday (Traz Powell), 7:30. Can the Bulls slow down a team that has been by far the best team in Florida – and one of the elite programs nationally. Talk to any college coach who recruits and knows this game and all will tell you that the Chiefs are as good as you get at this level. The Bulls are the defending 6A state champs.

No. 13 Chaminade-Madonna at Booker T. Washington, Friday, (Curtis Park), 7:30. Last year, the 3A Lions sent the Tornadoes on a tailspin that saw them not make the playoffs. With some key wins, this team is now the No.1 seed in 4A south. Chaminade-Madonna has a direct path at defending a 3A title they won last years. This is a big time game, here!
