Armando Salguero Is Happy The Dolphins Didn't Select "Jay Cutler Part Two"

Right before the Miami Dolphins' 11th overall pick in the opening round of the 2018 NFL Draft, it was looking like one of the top four quarterbacks was about to be available.

The opportunity disappeared in a flash. The Arizona Cardinals traded into the number 10 spot to ensure the chance to draft Carson Palmer's replacement. They went with UCLA's Josh Rosen. As a result, the decision to focus on their defense became very easy for the Miami Dolphins. The tempation of grabbing a new signal caller was gone, so they chose defensive back Minkah Fitzpatrick from Alabama.

The Miami Herald's Armando Salguero was quite relieved. The columnist joined the Joe Rose Show on Friday morning to react.

"I was really sweating the Josh Rosen situation last night," Salguero said, "because I don’t like Josh Rosen. I was worried that he was going to be there at 11, and a decision would have had to been made. I don’t like the opportunity to pick Jay Cutler part two.”

Crisis averted.

Now, the Dolphins add an excellent safety in Fitzpatrick. How will he fit into the starting lineup with pro-bowler Reshad Jones holding one spot and newly re-signed TJ McDonald presumably holding another?

“So, TJ is going to be on the team because cutting him costs more than keeping him," Salguero noted. "He does have value, but will he be around for a long time? I think signing him to a longer term contract was premature. I think when his contract balloons next season, I think that’s when you’ll see the end of TJ McDonald in a Dolphins uniform. He’s NOT playing ahead of Fitzpatrick.”
