LeBron James is headed to the NBA Finals for an eighth straight season. Many pundits view his upcoming series with Golden State as decisive for his future in Cleveland. Win it, and he stays in "The Land." Lose, and he will surely take his talents to Houston, Philadelphia or Los Angeles.

Ian Thomsen, author of "The Soul of Basketball," doesn't see things that way. He joined The Joe Rose Show on Tuesday morning. Win or lose, he expects LeBron to move on.

"His team is so much worse than it was last year," said Thomsen of the Cavaliers. "The Kyrie Irving trade was just a disaster for the Cavs, and I don’t see how, even if they win this championship, LeBron stays in Cleveland. The team is headed in the wrong direction. They haven’t defended well now for two years. LeBron has had to do everything. If he somehow defeats this Warriors team with less help than he's ever had...it'll be something."

For those reasons, Thomsen said "It might already be [LeBron James'] best season because of what he’s done."
