Miami Hurricanes head coach Manny Diaz addressed the media on Wednesday, and provided some insight on how he and offensive coordinator Dan Enos will decide on a starting quarterback.

As noted by Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald, this is the question Diaz asks about his quarterback competition between N'Kosi Perry, Jarren Williams and Tate Martell:

“Is somebody going to own it? And the guy that’s going to have it is the guy that has to have it, not the guy that wants to be the quarterback at Miami, but the guy that has to be. He’s compelled in all of his actions. When we get that level of compulsion to want to be that guy, the whole team will benefit from that.”

Fall camp opens for the Hurricanes on July 25th. Diaz says the competition will be wide open.

“We thought they were all, evaluating tape in Orlando [from the spring game], it was three guys on a level playing field."

If spring practices were any indication, this decision won't be easy. Martell, who transferred earlier this year from Ohio State, seemed behind early but finished strong. He was the top performer in the spring game. Perry is the most experienced but had an uneven 2018. Williams has almost no experience but appears to have the strongest arm of the three, and perhaps the most potential.

While I have a very tough time predicting who the opening day starter will be, I will make one prediction: One of these three will seek a transfer before the 2019 season ends. Whoever ends up third on the pecking order will almost certainly seek more playing time at another university.

Miami will open up their 2019 season on August 24th, when they take on the Florida Gators at Camping World Stadium in Orlando.
