The starting quarterback job is up for grabs at the University of Miami.

Sophomores Tate Martell and N'Kosi Perry are competing with redshirt freshman Jarren Williams for the vacancy.

First year head coach Manny Diaz has promised a clean slate for all of Miami's players.

Perry carries some baggage from 2018, but has a chance for a fresh start. Williams nearly transferred away from The U last winter. Martell just transferred in from Ohio State. \

According to quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator Dan Enos, all three have something in common: A need for improvement.

"We've made a little bit of progress but we haven't made a lot of progress in any area," Enos said of Miami's quarterbacks. "We have a lot of work to do."

Enos is new to Coral Gables. He spent 2018 at Alabama, working with the likes of Tua Tagovailoa and Jalen Hurts. He knows what greatness looks like, so how can Miami's crop reach that level?

First, he spoke on the attitude necessary to reach the top.

"We have to learn how to be a quarterback, first and foremost. We have to learn the off-the-field intangible things it takes to be a championship quarterback," Enos said. "Their preparation, their mindset, their focus, their attitude, the way they walk in this building every day and the mindset they have - that is a work in progress."

Then, Enos spoke on the tangibles of how to play the position. It sounds like Martell, Perry and Williams have a lot of work to do.

"We have a long way to go (on things like) taking a proper drop, the mechanics and where our eyes and feet go," noted Enos. "We're making strides, but it's been a slow process."

Just five days into spring practice, Miami has time. It's good to hear that Enos has his players getting back to fundamentals.

It doesn't sound like Diaz is in a rush to name a starter, noting that he won't do so "until it's obvious" who really stands out. Miami will open their season on August 24th when they take on the Florida Gators at Orlando's Camping World Stadium.
