Jimmy Butler Wants The Miami Heat

What felt like a quiet Miami Heat offseason is about to be turned upside down.

Last week, reports surfaced that Minnesota Timberwolves star Jimmy Butler had requested a trade. His preffered destinations, as reported last Thursday, were the Knicks, Nets and Clippers.

Suddenly, Miami is the frontrunner, as first reported by Marc Stein of the New York Times.

This had Heat nation thinking the deal could be imminant. On Thursday night, reports surfaced that the Heat had canceled a scheduled training camp practice in the evening. Surely, the cancellation means Butler is on his way? Nope. The Heat are holding camp on the campus at FAU, and the university had a scheduling conflict with their arena. The waiting game continued.

Reports of a third team surfaced. The Phoenix Suns would get involved, and re-acquire Miami's Goran Dragic in part of the deal to fill their point guard vacancy. To this point, it's just a rumor.

ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski provided the latest update on Thursday.

Translation: This is going to take time.

Butler's relationship with the Wolves and with Thibodeau is fractured. The best thing Minnesota can do is deal him away, but they don't wish to do this for pennies on the dollar. They are setting the negotiating bar high to start with, to ensure the best possible return.

Minnesota will definitely lobby to get one or more of Miami's best, young pieces. You'd better believe names like Josh Richardson and Bam Adebayo are being brought up in these talks. Miami won't be able to merely ship away a bad contract or two (like Whiteside or Tyler Johnson) and expect that to be enough.

The Heat are the frontrunner, here, but it will take time.
