LB Roquan Smith Is The "Home Run Pick" For The Dolphins, Says Omar Kelly

With round one of the 2018 NFL Draft just two days away, Omar Kelly from the South Florida Sun Sentinel joined The Joe Rose Show to discuss what direction the Miami Dolphins might take.

When asked to identify Miami's greatest position of need, Kelly did not hesitate.

“Linebacker is the most glaring need. Absolutely," he said. "If (Georgia LB) Roquan Smith is there, to me that’s the home run for this draft in terms of helping my team immediately get better.”

But what about Baker Mayfield? The Oklahoma quarterback has been a huge topic of discussion among Dolphins fans. Adam Gase has clearly taken an interest in the player, and the feelings appear mutual.

“Obviously, there’s an obsession with Baker Mayfield" Kelly said. "But I think he’s actually going to the Jets at number 3, and I’m not comfortable with the Dolphins trading what they need to trade to draft at number 2.”

To Kelly, it would require this year's first round pick along with next year's first rounder and an additional second round pick to move up to number two. They'll likely be bidding against the Buffalo Bills to acquire the pick from the New York Giants.

While he considers Roquan Smith to be the home run pick, he isn't the player Kelly predicted will land in Miami at pick eleven. In Kelly's final mock draft, Miami selects Florida State safety Derwin James.

“He’s one of the six elite players in this draft in my opinion and he really would help this defense because what they lack is a center fielder, a guy who can play free safety. Reshad Jones and TJ McDonald are both ‘in the box’ safeties. I would draft Derwin James and I would move TJ McDonald to the linebacker position. To me, that would take this defense to the next level.”
