The Miami Hurricanes are set to play their spring game this Saturday, April 14th at Hard Rock Stadium (you can listen to it from 5-8pm on WQAM!). Fans will get a chance to witness the early stages of the 2018 quarterback competition first hand. So far, it isn't close.

Canes head coach Mark Richt joined The Joe Rose Show on Wednesday morning. While N'Kosi Perry, Cade Weldon, and Jarren Williams are pushing Malik Rosier for the starting quaterback spot, Richt says the frontrunner is clear.

"[Rosier] is way out in front right now as far as understanding what to do, how to do it, and getting us in the right schemes," Richt said. "He’s just been streaky and we all know that.”

According to Richt, junior wide receiver Ahmmon Richards is on track to play in the season opener. Richards underwent season-ending knee surgery in late November.

“Ahmmon has been practicing in a noncompetitive situation," noted Richt. "He’s running routes and catches passes. He’s healthy and will be ready for the summer and training to be in tip top shape for the start of the season.”

Sophomore wideout Jeff Thomas will be another key weapon in the passing game, and "has done a great job as the outside WR and the inside slot," according to Richt. "He’s a matchup nightmare for people."

The Hurricanes have seen a legendary familiar face around the facility this spring. Future pro football hall of famer and former Canes safety Ed Reed paid a visit to Tuesday's practice.

“I love it. I love it," Richt said. "I told him whenever he shows up it means everything to those kids. It’s the beauty of The U to have those guys around the program. It raises the competition level of everyone out on the field. I stopped coaching and was just talking to him for a couple minutes, I almost asked him for his autograph," Richt said, chuckling.

You can listen to the full interview with Mark Richt on The Joe Rose Show Podcast. Tune in weekdays at 6am on 560 WQAM.
