FRIDAY FOCUS: No. 5 St. Thomas & No. 2 Deerfield Beach Clash This Evening

No matter where you look on the football schedule in south Florida, every week will have its marquee matchup.

Tonight, there are a number of games featuring South Florida High School Sports rated teams. No. 1 Carol City will be on the road for a meeting with No. 9 Southridge, which is coming off a huge district win.

Can the Spartans slow down a team that has run the clock on one state-rated program  - while dominating another program that had won 28 straight games.

On Deerfield Beach, all eyes will be on the annual No. 2 Deerfield Beach-No. 5 St. Thomas Aquinas meeting that promises to be entertaining.

This is a game that anything can happen - and it has throughout the years.

What makes this such a must-attend event is there talent you will see on the field. Two programs who are at the very top of their classes statewide - with the 7A Raiders looking to get back to Orlando after missing out last season.

St. Thomas has by far the easiest path to Orlando. Dwyer hasn’t pushed them at all over the past few years - and even though defending state champion Venice is still making noise, they are a shell of a team that barely beat the Raiders last year - with perhaps its best team in school history.

What Deerfield Beach has to run is a gauntlet that no other program in the state will have to overcome.

In 8A-Region 3, it’s defending state runner-up Delray Atlantic and Palm Beach Central. Add in Plantation, Western and Miramar, and the gauntlet has just started.

Region 4 Miami programs South Dade, Southridge, Palmetto and Christopher Columbus would be another obstacle for the Bucks.

Despite beating DeMatha Catholic in the opener, St. Thomas was stung by No. 3 Miami Central last month - and has played an average schedule the rest of the way.

No matter how you slice the meeting, it should come down to a pair of defensive units that head coach Roger Harriott and Deerfield’s Jevon Glenn stood toe-to-toe a year ago as both teams just got over the 100 total yardage mark.

As both offenses have improved, tonight’s game will still be about defense and which team make the least mistakes.
