OFF SEASON FOOTBALL: Big Opportunities At Local Camps

As we know already, there is really no true off season in football.

While some prospects may take a few weeks away from the sport to recover from a long season – the objective is still all about attracting a college scholarship.

The edge that you gain in the off season by staying in shape and learning could mean everything to these underclassmen.

One of the off season events that has caught on is the popular T48 Friday Night Lights monthly FREE camp at Calvary Christian Academy in Fort Lauderdale.

With one-time Calvary Christian record-setting quarterback Javan Shashaty and his father coming with this idea three years ago – to give back to the community – things have been taking off since.

Held monthly away from the high school football season, this event not only showcases the talent that these many south Florida underclassmen bring to the table, but they are watched and taught my college coaches – such as this past Friday night with Keiser University head coach Doug Socha and staff members from ASA Miami coming out to teach, and yes, set the table for recruiting.

“There are a billion camps that these young men can go to throughout the off season, but we offer so much more that just football,” said Shashaty, who serve as Youth Minister at Calvary Christian. “Yes football is important, but we bring in collegiate and high school players who share their experiences on and off the playing field.”

In addition to learning for two hours, the campers who attend get a T-Shirt, a chance to bring home some football-related prizes and put some much-needed religion into their lives.

This month’s special football guest was Mississippi State senior quarterback Nick Fitzgerald, who is preparing for the upcoming NFL Draft.

“Having quality people like Nick and so many other athletes come out here is a way they can share their lives with these young men,” Shashaty said. “I think it’s important to hear things beyond football.”

With head coach Matt Dubuc from defending 5A state champion Cardinal Gibbons coming out, this was one of the most well attended camp as over 100 prospects came out to get better.

Dubuc brought his two young sons out for their first ever camp – as well as a few of his rising underclassmen.

“I can tell you this, I was as impressed with this camp as anything I had ever attended,” Dubuc said. “Well run, no standing around. It was tremendous two hours. I will certainly bring a lot more of my team and my coaches on March 1 when they do this again.”

Every month that this camp is hosted, the top performers are recognized for turning heads and elevating their game.
