SPRING SPOTLIGHT – Northwestern’s Objective Is Still The Same – Win!

There is not a school in the state of Florida that understands “never quit” more than the two-time defending 6A state champion Miami Northwestern.

Two years ago – while choosing the team that would represent south Florida in 6A, Carol City was mentioned. So was longtime power Central. But there were very few talking Bulls.

That year, this team went to Orlando and stunned Seffner Armwood in a defensive showdown – surprising everyone.

This past season, the Bulls were once again NOT picked as the team to head to Orlando – and after a 5-5 regular season finish, there was no way that head coach Max Edwards and his team would ever have a chance.

In a five week period, this program not only made a run at another state title – with defense and an offense that did what was needed to win – but they ended as one of the most complete teams in Florida.

Now, as the 2019 season is upon us, the Bulls are major favorites to reach Daytona Beach – as they move to 5A, and yes, they are stacked with talent.

Leaving Carol City and Central behind, once again, it will be all about defense this coming year.

With several key losses on both sides of the ball – especially on that defensive unit – it’s all about producing a quality team.

Up front on defense, look for this unit to once again be stingy and loaded with gifted playmakers. The Class of 2020 in stacked with prospects in Terrell Torrence, Jr., Wati Huggins, Travaris Lark, Raheem Berry, Nathan Holloway and very gifted transfer Johnny Reid.

The Bulls will also feature Class of 2021 standouts Timonty Bostic and Ja'Corey Hammet.

The linebackers will also be steady with 2020 standouts Jimmie Watson and Earnest Johnson – as well as Class of 2021 stars Terrence Lewis and Kareem Roberts.

The strongest part of the defensive group will be in the secondary – where the Bulls may have one of the most athletic in south Florida.

A gifted Class of 2020 group features Ronald Delancy III, Demarcus Fleming and Keane Lewis.

But the 2021 collection may be hard to match anywhere – with Timothy Burns, Jr., Kris Fowles, fast rising Winsome Frazier, Kamren Kinchens and Antwan Massie.

While nobody has to tell you anything about the defensive unit that the Bulls put together every year, there will always be concern about scoring points.

Northwestern starts with 2020 quarterback Kemani Brown, who will be tested by some youngsters who are on the roster as well.

Even though Miami Central boasts one of the nation’s deepest running games, the Bulls are certainly not far behind.

Class of 2020 standouts Nathaniel Noel, Andre Stringfield and Najeh Bethel all have the talent and athletic ability to do very well.

Adding balance to the running game will be the job of a group of receivers that have the opportunity to be very special.

Standout Class of 2020 prospect Marcus Fleming heads a list that also includes gifted 2021 athletes Kahlil Brantley, Romello Brinson and Tim Brown, Jr. – and Class of 2022 rising standout Zaylan-Reese Pittman.

It’s tough to ever remember when the Bulls didn’t have a tremendous offensive line – and this coming year will be no exception.

Class of 2020 Justyn Mack (C,G,T) will be joined by 2021 prospect Ricky Taylor (G), and quick rising 2022 players Tellek Lockette (G,T), Damario Worthy (T) and Jasson Battuim.

Class of 2021 kicker Leonardo Zuazo comes in this year to help the Bulls; special teams.
