FOOTBALL FRIDAY: Season Is On The Line For Several Teams

While the year may not come to an end for some schools today, their immediate future can be dictated by what happens today and tonight.

With the new RPI rankings in place, we have talked all about the playoff slotting that is still going on, and even though there is one week remaining in the regular season, dreams can come to an end on football field across south Florida today.

As we talked earlier this week – there are district championships very much on the line – as it was last night at Harris Field – when Palmetto came from behind to beat South Dade, 46-42

Winning just twice a year ago, head coach C.J. Wimberley and his Blanche Ely Tigers (7-1) can wrap up a district title and a high seeding with a win against power Delray Beach Atlantic.

That is just one of several games that fans, players, coaches and students will be watching with great interest on this Friday.

After losing last week to 8A Vero Beach, head coach Damien Jones and his two-time defending 3A champion Chaminade-Madonna Lions, rated No. 10 by the South Florida High School Sports, will play host to No. 4 Miami Central. Right now, both teams are No. 2 seed. The Lions in 3A and the Rockets in 6A.

Even though 2A Champagnat Catholic is a No. 1 seed and is looking to get back to the state championships for the fourth straight year, head coach Hector Clavijo and the Lions would like nothing better to beat a Gulliver Prep team that has everything rolling for them.

Head Coach Earl Sims and the Raiders are a No. 1 seed, unbeaten and are rated No. 14 in south Florida.

This is an afternoon (3:30) game with credibility on the line for these two programs searching for respect.

Other games this evening – such as Coral Gables and Columbus could be a huge boost for the Cavaliers if they can knock off the struggling Explorers.
