Dolphins May Play it Safe with Tua Tagovailoa, But Shouldn't

With the NFL season kicking off next week, the Dolphins have still not named a starting QB for their opening week matchup with New England.  Most people think Ryan Fitzpatrick will hold onto the position with Tua Tagovailoa and Josh Rosen serving as the backups.

With no preseason, people are yearning to see what Tua is capable of in his rookie season, and also to see how his injured hip will hold up when he gets hit.

Pete Prisco joined The Joe Rose Show Wednesday morning and after hearing Coach Brian Flores comment on Tua’s health, Prisco said, “Are they afraid of him taking shots because that what it sounds like to me.”

Before practice Tuesday, Flores said Tua's injury would play a factor in his staff determining who would be active on game day.

“We’re at 10 months," Flores said. "It was a pretty serious injury. He looks good, though. Flores also continued with some comments about Tua in practice.

"He’s healthy," the coach said. "He’s moving around to his right and to his left. But yes, that’s part of the conversation.”

As far as what to do when the season kicks off, Prisco thinks if Tua is good to go there is no reason to wait.

“I’m a big believer of if the young quarterback is healthy, get on with it, because all you do is delay the inevitable and the Dolphins have been searching for a QB since Marino," Prisco said. "If you think this guy is your guy then get on with it if he’s healthy and that’s the caveat and it sounds like there are concerns about his health and if that’s the case you play Ryan Fitzpatrick."

The Dolphins begin the season a week from Sunday, so the wait is almost over.
